One-sheet entryway bench
A 36-inch bench with six shoe cubbies underneath and a full back, from one sheet of ¾-inch plywood. The dividers under the seat are what carry you.
One-sheet bookcase
A 24-inch-wide, 60-inch-tall bookcase with five bays and a full back, cut from a single sheet of ¾-inch plywood with 2 inches to spare.
1x6 bookends
A pair of L-shaped bookends from four 6-inch pieces. The books' own weight on the base holds the upright.
1x4 spice rack
Three shelves between two sides, lips on the lower two so jars stay put, a back rail to hang it. Sized for standard spice jars, all from one 1x4.
1x8 serving board
One hardwood board, rounded corners, a hanging hole. The simplest project on the site and the one that gets used most.
1x8 wall shelf with backboard
A 24-inch shelf with a full backboard and two triangular brackets, all from one 1x8. Screws to two studs and holds real weight.
1x6 bench hook
The hand-tool jig that makes every other project easier: a board with a fence on top and a hook underneath, so you can crosscut square without clamps.
2x4 hammer rack
A rail that stands 3½ inches off the wall. Hammer heads rest on the rail, handles hang behind it, claws clear the wall. Lands on three studs.
2x4 plant stand
A square-topped stand that lifts a pot off the porch floor. Two H-frames and a three-slat top.
2x4 planter box
A chunky two-course planter for herbs, succulents, or a single tomato plant. Solid 1½-inch walls and a slatted bottom.
1x6 boot jack
The classic: one board with a rounded notch, a block under the notch end, and kerf grooves where your foot goes. Hook your heel, step on the other end, pull.
2x4 shop mallet
A laminated three-layer mallet with a shaped handle. Heavy enough to seat joints and drive chisels, and the first tool most people should make.
2x4 step stool
A solid one-step stool for the kitchen, the shop, or reaching the top shelf, glued up from three slats and two slab legs.
